Ambulances & Vehicle Capability

S Hoult

Ambulance capability and equipment is covered in detail within the rules for British Horseracing and British Eventing
(links to medical rules).

General points to consider are:

•    number of ambulance vehicles and personnel
•    equipment
•    off road capability AND access around the course or site

Off road capability usually necessitates a 4WD vehicle. In some circumstances a large All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) which can carry a patient on a stretcher may be appropriate to transfer to firmer ground.

Even off road vehicles may not be able to access all parts of the course or site unless routes are anticipated, identified and manned or otherwise kept open. Gates, tapes and crossing points need to be considered with a potential emergency in mind.
